In The Painter, the protagonist is haunted by the moniker "Paint," a reminder of his past as he traverses the realms of Umlom. Set against the backdrop of quaint villages like Kinney and the bustling town of Munum, his journey unfolds in a world where every location deeply mirrors his internal conflicts and revelations. Through interactions with characters like the vibrant Grelda or the reflective moments at bloodfir groves, his travels expose a rich tapestry of human connections and the quest for personal redemption amidst scenic landscapes that are as introspective as they are visually striking.
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
For this Co/Create, you can simply submit your portfolio with a written explanation of the art you hope to create for the story.
Alternatively, you may also submit any original piece of visual content that conveys your vision for the subterranean world, including but not limited to:
- Fully realized comic panel illustrations
- Sketches or preliminary drawings of the environment and characters
- Concept art or mood boards that convey the style and theme of the story
- Any other visual representations that capture the tone of the story
Design Notes:
The creator of The Painter has highlighted the visual aesthetic of the video game “Gris” as a reference point for the desired art style, known for its elegant use of color, form, and symbolism.

FINAL DELIVERABLES
The selected artist for this Co/Create will create a series of comic panels for The Painter story as is currently written (see The Painter on Royal Road for reference). The artist will collaborate with the creator of The Painter to determine the nature of the content for each panel and the number of panels needed to bring the series to life.
HOW IT WORKS
Interested artists should submit their depiction of the environments described in the Submission Requirements.
The creative team of The Painter will evaluate all submissions based on the factors outlined in the submission guidelines, selecting the visual representations that best fit the narrative.
The winning artist will work with the creative team to refine their submission and finalize the visuals to be integrated into the The Painter story.
As the visuals are developed, they will be incorporated into The Painter to enrich the depiction of the protagonist’s journey.
The artist will be appropriately credited and recognized for their contributions to the The Painter project.
