Co/Create: 90’s-era DBRIS Wordmark Logo Design
Creator Statement
Here are too many versions of a 90's DBRIS logo. I many have had just a bit too much fun working on this and in the end had a hard time narrowing down to my favorite. Overall Design Notes: I’ve spent the last few weeks researching logo evolution and logo design trends in the 1990s. Strong logos tend to change very little over time and when modernizing a logo designers look for key elements. So working backwards from the current logo, I thought about what elements from a retro logo would a modern designer keep when bringing it into the 21st century. The star dotting the “i” is the obvious choice, so all of my designs make use of it in one way or another. *See Seal Logo: Colors: I feel like I struggled to find the right colors, but in the end I’m happy with where I landed. While the brief explicitly called for a use of color, the current logo is black and it is unusual (albeit not unheard of) for a color logo to evolve to a black and white logo. Eventually I settled on vibrant colors that are both richer and less shocking than the neons of the late 80s and early 00s. Fonts: The fonts for this project were fun. All of the options that I have included use exclusively fronts that were published in the 90s or prior. BodegaSans, Copperplate, Futura, Garamond, and Gill Sans to name a few. (Note: All of the fonts have been expanded to minimize rendering errors) “And”: In all* of my designs I choose to replace the “and” in Disco Ball Research and Investigation Society with a “+”. I played around for a while looking at “and”, “&”, and “+” and ultimately decided that I like the way “+” mirrors the star in the logo. All that is to say, it was a deliberate choice on my end. (Bonus points to anyone who attempts to read this paragraph aloud!) Seal Logo: This is the logo that breaks all the rules. It doesn’t have the star dotting the “i”. It spells out the word “and”. It lacks color. And it’s not a wordmark. Despite all that, it earned its place in this submission because it was the first version of the logo I designed. It is very 90s in a subdued kinda way. And I link the disco ball in the background. I know it’s not the strongest logo, and it barely fits the brief but I couldn’t leave it out. If you have any other questions about my choices, let me know. I had a lot (too much) fun working on this and would love to talk about it more!
