Collaborate with us on the backstory for Grace Blevins, one of the supporting characters in THE DISCO BALL. We are seeking a writer to tell Grace’s backstory as a scripted short story, which will ultimately become a core consumptive component of Chapter 1 of THE DISCO BALL.
Interested writers should submit an original short script based on the included story context and creative considerations.
Submissions should be:
- English language
- 3-5 pages
- Written in script format
- First person narration in the voice of Grace Blevins
The seeds of Grace’s backstory are planted in Chapter 1 during Captain Alma Cooke’s discussion with Dr. Bauer:
“Grace Blevins is a flight officer from somewhere in Georgia with two degrees from MIT and a family that seems either threatened or embarrassed by her success. She’s the first and only person in her family to go to college, but rather than that being a source of pride her family seems to consider it a rejection of their values and way of life.”
Later we’ll discover that Grace has always had a fractured relationship with her family, whether it was conflict with her father over her decision not to participate in the family business, or with her mother over her sexuality, or her brothers over politics and her level of success in relation to their own.
The goal is to create a comprehensive backstory written like a short story with a clear beginning middle and end, but in script format and with the freedom to include dialogue with other characters from Grace's life. In short, make Grace a three-dimensional character.
Questions that can be addressed include:
- What does this character want more than anything, and how does this desire propel her in the story?
- What event from her past forced her out of her "status quo" and set her on her life’s journey?
- Does the character have love in her life?
- What are some other backstory anecdotes and character details that can be referenced and addressed in the core narrative of our story?
Interested writers should submit an original script specifically written for Grace’s backstory (creative portfolio and writing sample optional).
Our creative team will review all submitted applications, considering narrative writing proficiency, creativity, and alignment with the creative guidelines and existing world of THE DISCO BALL. The writer whose script best meets the criteria will be contacted and provided with feedback. This may involve discussions on refining plot points, touching up dialogue, or changing narrative details to ensure the design aligns with the vision of the character, episode, and franchise.
The writer’s whose script is chosen will work closely with the creative team to finalize, incorporating feedback and making any necessary revisions.
Once finalized, the approved script will be integrated into the story, appearing in Chapter 1 of THE DISCO BALL core narrative.
Writer will be appropriately credited and recognized for their contributions.
